Izanagi & Izanami: The Origin of Japan



In Japanese mythology, two deities Izanagi and Izanami is the creator of Japan and other deities. So, they were the origin of everything that exists in Japan. In an important in Japanese mythology, is told they fall into Yomitsu Kuni, the underworld or the world also called darkness. Stories about Izanagi and Izanami are told in two works: Kojiki (ancient records) and Nihongi (Japanese history).


According to legend, after their appearance, Izanagi and Izanami stood on the flying bridge to heaven, and fuss over the ocean with a spear decorated with diamonds. When they lifted his lance, water droplets back into the water and form the first ground, the island called Onogoro. Izanagi and Izanami went down to the island and became husband and wife. Their first child was disabled, and other deities said if that happens because Izanami spoke before her husband during her wedding ceremony (a sort of Japanese tradition).

The couple later married again. Izanami gave birth to 8 children, who later became the islands in Japan. Izanagi and Izanami also created many deities that symbolize mountains, valleys, waterfalls, rivers, wind and other natural appearance. But at birth Kagutsuchi, the god of fire, burned Izanami.

When Izanami died, Izanami went to Yomitsu Kuni. Izanagi decided to go down to the Yomitsu Kuni and save her soul mate from the world of death. As he approached the gate of Yomi, Izanagi Izanami welcomed from the shadows. Izanami Izanagi warned for not seeing him and said that he will plan his escape from Yomi (the god Yomitsu Kuni). Because really missed his wife, Izanagi lit a torch to find Yomi, but he was very surprised when I saw that Izanami was a rotten corpse. Can not stand to see it, Izanagi fled.

Izanami angry, then he sent the demons women, 8 god of lightning, and an army of scary to pursue Izanagi. Izanagi tried to get out and block the road between Yomi and the land of life with a big stone. Izanagi and Izanami met there and they divorced.

Izanagi felt he did not holy after contact with the world of the dead. Therefore, he bathed separately purified themselves back. A number of gods and goddesses, both evil and good, came from discarded clothes by Izanagi. Sun goddess Amaterasu emerges from her left eye, the moon god Tsukiyomi from his right eye, and Susano-o of the nose. Then, Izanagi 3 children to share his kingdom to his pride.
